BATES, George Joseph, (father of William Henry Bates), a Representative from Massachusetts; born in Salem, Essex County, Mass., February 25, 1891; attended the public schools; member of the State house of representatives 1918-1924; served as mayor of Salem, Mass., 1924-1937; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-fifth and to the six succeeding Congresses and served from January 3, 1937, until his death in an airplane accident at the Washington (D.C.) National Airport on November 1, 1949; interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem, Mass.
