James HAWKES, Congress, NY (1776-1865)

HAWKES, James, a Representative from New York; born in Petersham, Worcester County, Mass., December 13, 1776; moved with his parents to Richfield, N.Y., in 1789; attended the common schools; taught school in Richfield and later in Burlington, N.Y.; returned to Richfield and served as sheriff of Otsego County 1815-1819; member of the State assembly in 1820; elected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress (March 4, 1821-March 3, 1823); died in Rochester, N.Y., on October 2, 1865; interment in Mount Hope Cemetery.
