STRATTON, Nathan Taylor, a Representative from New Jersey; born in Pilesgrove Township, Salem County, N.J., near Swedesboro, March 17, 1813; attended the common schools; moved to Mullica Hill, N.J., in 1829 and clerked in a store, becoming a partner of his employer in 1835; conducted his own business 1840-1886; member of the State general assembly 1843-1844; justice of the peace 1844-1847; also engaged in the real estate business and in agricultural pursuits; held several local offices; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second and Thirty-third Congresses (March 4, 1851-March 3, 1855) was not a candidate for renomination in 1854; again engaged in mercantile pursuits; elected as a member of the Harrison Township committee in 1865; served as State tax commissioner; trustee of the State reform school for boys at Jamesburg, N.J., 1865-1887; delegate to the Union National Convention of Conservatives at Philadelphia in 1866; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1880 to the Forty-seventh Congress; died in Mullica Hill, N.J., March 9, 1887; interment in the Baptist Cemetery.
