Willard IVES, Congress, NY (1806-1896)

IVES, Willard, a Representative from New York; born in Watertown, Jefferson County, N.Y., July 7, 1806; attended the common schools, also Belleville (N.Y.) Academy, and Lowville (N.Y.) Academy; engaged in agricultural pursuits and was also interested in banking; member of the State house of representatives in 1829 and 1830; delegate to the world convention of Methodists held in London, England, in 1846; unsuccessful candidate for election to the Thirtieth Congress in 1848; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress (March 4, 1851-March 3, 1853); president of Ives Seminary, Antwerp, N.Y., which he endowed; one of the originators and organizers of Syracuse University and served on the board of trustees 1870-1886; resumed agricultural pursuits; died in Watertown, N.Y., April 19, 1896; interment in Brookside Cemetery.
