Alex Garland

English writer Alex Garland made a splash with his first novel, The Beach, but has since become better known for his screenplays for the films 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Ex Machina. Garland studied History at the University of Manchester and graduated in 1992. Just four years later, The Beach was published to wide acclaim and big sales; it was made into a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio in 2000. Although Garland wasn't involved in the making of that movie, he got to know its director, Danny Boyle, and together they made 2002's scary zombie classic 28 Days Later and 2007's sci-fi movie Sunshine. With 2015's Ex Machina, Garland made his debut as director. His other work includes the novel The Tesseract (1998) and the novella The Coma (2004, with illustrations by his cartoonist father Nicholas Garland), and the screenplays for Never Let Me Go (2010, starring Keira Knightley) and Dredd (2012).
