Novelist David Mitchell earns heaps of critical praise for his ambitious, structurally complex novels, including 2001's number9dream and 2004's Cloud Atlas. Educated at the University of Kent, Mitchell wrote his first novel, Ghostwritten (1999), while living in Japan. It was well-received and won minor literary awards, and his next two novels, number9dream and Cloud Atlas, were both shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. By 2005 he was considered to be one of Britain's best new novelists, and in 2007 Time magazine listed Mitchell as one of the 100 "most influential people in the world." His other novels include the semi-autobiographical Black Swan Green (2006) and The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet (2010).
