On this date in 1987, damaging thunderstorms continued to blanket the Midwest. Wind gusts up to 80 mph at Springfield, Illinois, blew over two large beer tents at a state fair, injuring 58 people. By the time the month was over, August of 1987 was the wettest month ever on record for the city of Chicago.
