Jonathan Harvey ROWELL, Congress, IL (1833-1908)


ROWELL, Jonathan Harvey, a Representative from Illinois; born in Haverhill, Grafton County, N.H., February 10, 1833; attended Rock Creek School; was graduated from Eureka College, Illinois; during the Civil War served as a company officer in the Seventeenth Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced practice in Bloomington, Ill.; Stateâs attorney of the eighth judicial circuit of Illinois 1868-1872; elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1883-March 3, 1891); chairman, Committee on Elections (Fifty-first Congress); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1890 to the Fifty-second Congress; resumed the practice of law; died in Bloomington, McLean County, Ill., May 15, 1908; interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
