Cohen; Auburn board of voter registration 1971-1973; served in Maine house of representatives 1973-1976; served in Maine State senate 1976-1978; delegate, Maine State Republican convention 1976; delegate, Republican National Convention 1976; elected as a Republican to the Ninety-sixth and to the seven succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1979-January 3, 1995); was not a candidate for reelection to the House of Representatives in 1994, but was elected to the United States Senate in 1994; reelected in 2000, and again in 2006 for the term ending January 3, 2013; chair, Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship (One Hundred Eighth and One Hundred Ninth Congresses).
