Malia Obama entered the fifth grade in 2008; she and her sister began attending Sidwell Friends School in January of 2009 after her family moved to Washington, D.C. for her father's inauguration. on January 20, 2017. Malia Obama was 18 years old when her father finished his second term. She graduated from high school in May of 2016; that same month, the White House announced that Malia would attend Harvard University beginning in the fall of 2017, saying in a statement: "The President and Mrs. Obama announced today that their daughter Malia will attend Harvard University in the fall of 2017 as a member of the Class of 2021.
