- Exxon Valdez Oil Spill
- On March 24, 1989, in Prince William Sound, Alaska, an Exxon Valdez tanker struck an undersea reef, causing more than 10 million gallons of oil to spill into the water over several days. The oil spill spread to 1,300 miles of coastline and 11,000 square miles of ocean. An estimated 250,000 sea birds, 2,800 sea otters, 300 harbor seals, 250 bald eagles, and 22 whales were killed. There were also billions of salmon and herring eggs lost in the spill. It was the largest oil spill in U.S. waters until the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon spill.
