New England Patriots defeat St. Louis Rams, 20-17, 2001 Season
Super Bowl XXVI Patriots Adam Vinatieri
Super Bowl XXXVI was the first Super Bowl ever played in February because the NFL had delayed a week of regular season games due to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Also, because of Sept. 11, this Super Bowl was the first one declared a National Special Security Event (NSSE) by the Office of Homeland Security. The game was the third Super Bowl appearance for both teams. Rams quarterback, two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner and his "greatest show on turf" offense overcame three turnovers and scored two touchdowns to tie it late in the game. However, with no timeouts left, Tom Brady led a game-winning drive that ended with Adam Vinatieri (pictured above) kicking a 48-yard field goal as time expired. Brady received his first Super Bowl MVP for completing 16 of 27 passes and one touchdown.
